We are looking for solutions to help advance environmental protection! The Nessling Foundation’s general call for grant applications is open from 14.8.2017–15.9.2017. This year, too, emphasis is placed on the applications of researchers who have already earned their doctoral degrees. With regard to theses, we emphasize novel proposals in particular. For the first time, in our 2017 application process we will be awarding the grant as a lump sum for the whole grant period. Funding will also be granted for the communication and implementation of research knowledge.
An info session for grant applicants was held on June 16th. You can also watch a recording of the info session on our Facebook page and view the presentation slides here and here.
The Nessling Foundation awards funding for scientific research promoting environmental protection, and for the communication and implementation of research knowledge. Support is awarded for projects whose results can be applied to Finnish environmental protection and societal decision-making, or which otherwise support Finland’s environmental objectives.
This year, for the first time, we are awarding grants for the whole grant period:
a maximum of four years for a thesis project and a maximum of two years for a post-doc project.
We review the guidelines and criteria of the grant application process every year. Grant applicants must always check that their applications meet our funding criteria. Comprehensive guidelines on how to apply for grants can be found in the Grants section of our website. Before filling in your application, you will need to pass an “application test” to ensure that you have fully understood the foundation’s criteria and guidelines. Be sure to read our guidelines and criteria carefully and fill in the application according to the requirements.
There are a large number of applicants, so applications that have been filled in sloppily and contrary to our criteria are automatically eliminated from the competition.
Who can apply for a grant, and for what?
If your study or idea for implementing research knowledge furthers the solving of environmental challenges, you can apply for one of our grants. We grant support for all scientific fields and encourage cooperation between scientific fields and sectors.
In 2017, we are only awarding personal working grants for research. We are still funding theses, but our emphasis is on post-doc research. We will fund a thesis if the project is just beginning or less than halfway through.
A post-doc project applicant must have completed their doctoral thesis no more than five years ago. The grant can also be used in a non-Finnish research institute. The mobility of researchers is considered a plus at the Nessling Foundation!
More money than last year has been earmarked for the communication of research knowledge. Last year our grants were used, for example, for writing the Teacher’s climate guide, making a YouTube video series about a ringed seal-friendly fish trap and developing new formats for improving climate journalism.
Take a look at the other projects funded last year here.
The communication and interaction plan is an important part of the application
In accordance with our rules, we are to fund impactful research. Research or knowledge will not have an impact if it isn’t passed on to society. Therefore, it is important to already consider in the application stage which parties will benefit from or be interested in your research, and who should be told about the research and how. Comprehensive guidelines for making a communication and interaction plan can be found in the Instructions for applying for funding section of our website.
