On this page, you will find frequently asked questions about the Murros call. If you cannot find an answer to your question, feel free to contact us via email at: .
When is the Murros-call open?
The Murros-call will take place from 11.8.–29.8.2025 in parallel with the general funding call of the Nessling Foundation.
Who can apply for the Murros-funding?
Funding can be applied for by Finnish research organisations. Additionally, project may involve multiple co-implementers. The application must be submitted by the project leader who represents the main research organisation implementing the project.
Can the same person apply for funding in both the Murros-call and in the general call in 2025?
The Murros-call is open at the same time with the general funding call of the Nessling Foundation. The same entity/person can apply for funding in both the Murros-call and the general funding call for a science-based action project, but they can act as the project leader or main implementer in only one of these applications. Those applying for doctoral thesis or postdoc project funding in the general call cannot be involved in applying for funding from the Murros-call.
Is it possible to get feedback on my application before submitting it?
You can receive feedback on your project idea before submitting the application if you send an idea paper by 27 April. The feedback will be based on the idea paper.
Is an idea paper a mandatory part of the application?
No. The idea paper is a voluntary part of the application process and will not be evaluated. It is not a formal requirement for applying for or receiving funding. The purpose of the idea paper and the feedback provided is to help applicants create the best possible applications.
Can I apply for a one-year project?
No. The duration of the project must be two years, and a shorter implementation period cannot be applied for.
How much funding is granted for a project?
Funding can be applied for up to a maximum of 500,000 euros including overhead costs.
Can overhead costs be applied for the project?
The overhead costs applied for and paid to the main implementing research organisation can account for a maximum of 15 per cent of the project’s total costs. The total amount applied for, including overhead costs, cannot exceed 500,000 euros.
Can I apply for funding from the Murros call if I am already receiving funding from the Nessling Foundation?
Funding can be applied for if the applicant has an ongoing project funded by the Nessling Foundation that is nearing completion. However, the current Nessling-funded project must be completed by the time the applicant begins receiving funding from the Murros-call.
If the applicant is a university, can the university pay a salary or grant to researchers involved in the project who do not already have an employment contract with the university?
In the Murros-call, the main applicant must be a Finnish research organisation, such as a university. The Nessling Foundation pays the full grant to the main implementing organisation, which is responsible for distributing the funding to co-implementers. The administrative procedures of the university or other research organisation must be confirmed directly with the respective organisation.
Why does the Murros call fund only two projects? Why not distribute smaller amounts to a larger number of recipients?
The Murros-call is an additional grant call of the Nessling Foundation to complement our existing funding instruments. We specifically wanted to create a funding instrument for larger projects, as there was a gap for such an instrument. Smaller projects, with a maximum budget of 100,000 euros, can apply for project funding through our general funding call for action based on science. These so-called action projects must contribute to a sustainability transformation that safeguards natural systems. Therefore, their theme may also relate to structural overconsumption.
Is there a self-financing requirement in the call?
No.
Can the project receive funding from other sources?
Yes, it can. The project’s overall funding plan must be presented in the project application. The Nessling Foundation’s contribution to the project is a maximum of 500,000 euros, including overhead costs.
